Why explore other ways ?
I am only 24, yet I feel like I already have a few different lives behind me.
Growing up on a tiny island of the Caribbean, I never thought of becoming a model. However, after winning the Elite Model Look contest, I decided to take the opportunity that was presenting itself to me and at sixteen, moved to New York. Next thing I knew it was fashion week and I walked over sixty shows, closed Prada in Milan, opened Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent in Paris among others. Although it wasn’t a little girl’s dream, looking back I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for this career that allowed me, during seven years, to work with the most creative people in the fashion industry and to travel around the world.
Last year however, I decided to put my career on hold, leaving photosets and runways for Columbia University’s classrooms. I have always enjoyed learning and felt ready for a new challenge. And needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed by it ! The workload was way above my expectations. Eventually though, thanks to a lot of coffee, determination and focus, I got used to it. I found my new routine at school and made it it to the Dean’s List my two semesters.
But now I want to start a new chapter of my life. Although I do love the intellectual stimulation and the feeling of becoming more knowledgeable every day, I want to embark on a new journey, that I believe will be as valuable as college education.
From the youngest age I have been surrounded by many different cultures. I was raised by a Swedish dad and a French mom, while at school I was hearing creole and learning traditional dance. I have always been fascinated by the way our environment influences our way of not only being in the world, but also seeing it. Every time I encounter a new place, culture, religion or tradition, I feel my mind expanding.
Therefore, in a few days I will set off to south east Asia and immerse myself in the unknown. Not to escape reality nor to have fun, but to grow as an individual. To broaden my vision and understanding of life.
I consider myself very fortunate to be able to take this time to explore other ways. Through this blog I would like to share my experiences and thoughts. And who knows, maybe even inspire others to do the same. I believe that one of the things we need in our world right now is more people coming to the realization that the “other”, the unknown, is not as scary as we are made to believe it is. Underneath all these illusory differences lies a much more meaningful and beautiful unity.
I hope you’ll join me in this adventure,
